    Supporting education in refugee settings

    We have significant experience in supporting teaching and learning in refugee settings. In addition to our work with Alexandria Schools Trust, supporting the training of Syrian refugee teachers in Lebanon and Jordan, we have also been developing the global evidence base on education for refugees and internally displaced persons. This has been a key focus of our research and consultancy work in recent years, in partnership with IIEP-UNESCO. We continue to facilitate policy dialogue based on our research findings, which we also use to inform our programmatic work in refugee and conflict-affected settings around the world.

    This report, the final in a series of country reports, investigates teacher management in refugee contexts in Uganda. It contributes to a burgeoning body of evidence about teachers in refugee contexts and aims to provide policy guidance to support ministries of education.

    Teachers of refugees: a review of the literature

    Education Development Trust and IIEP UNESCO joined forces to conduct a much-needed review of the main aspects of management relating to teachers of refugees – from recruitment to certification and professional development as well as incentives and retention.

    EDT and IIEP-UNESCO bring ministers together for key knowledge workshop in Ugandan refugee settlement

    At the end of July, EDT and IIEP-UNESCO, with the support of UNHCR, held a highly successful knowledge workshop in Uganda – the culmination of a key research project into the management of teachers of refugees. The event brought together ministerial delegates from Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia, along with representatives from UNHCR and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD.) It offered the opportunity for delegates to learn from one another and to share experiences related to the inclusion of teachers of refugees within national education systems.

    To mark the launch of a new research brief on practical steps to support teachers in refugee settings in Kenya, EDT was delighted to convene a recent high-impact workshop with IIEP-UNESCO. The event, attended by government representatives from several key departments, focused on developing strategic, tangible plans to improve the quality of teaching and learning available to all students in Kenya’s refugee hosting communities.

    Panel discussion: teacher management in crisis contexts

    EDT was recently invited to take part in a panel discussion hosted by the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) discussing teacher management in crisis contexts. Our Senior Education Consultant, Helen West, and Senior Research Officer, Donvan Amenya, joined experts from Colombia University, UNHCR, INEE, RISE and the IGAD Regional Program on Education, to share best practice for teachers in challenging settings across Myanmar and East Africa.
