Remembering Sir Jim Rose

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the loss of Sir Jim Rose, President of Education Development Trust, who died on 9th February 2023.

Following a hugely distinguished career in education, Sir Jim joined the Board of Trustees at Education Development Trust (then CfBT) in 2009 and acted as Chair of its Education Committee from 2010 to 2014, when he was appointed President of the organisation – an appointment which was renewed in May 2020.

After having served as a headteacher in two large, inner-city primary schools, he joined Her Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMI) for schools in the UK and went on to become Director of Inspection for the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) in 1995.

Following his retirement from Ofsted in 1999, Sir Jim acted as a consultant and as an independent reviewer of government enquiries.  He advised several overseas governments on school inspection working, for example, for the World Bank and the British Council in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, the USA, South America and the Palestinian Ministry of Education. At the request of the then Secretary of State for Education, he led several independent reviews, including a Review of the Teaching of Early Reading (2006), a Review of the Primary Curriculum (2008) and a review of the Teaching of Dyslexia (2009). He was also President of the National Foundation for Education Research.

We are hugely grateful for Sir Jim’s years of service both to EDT and to the education sector at large. He will be greatly missed, and we send our condolences to his family and all who knew him.
