International comparative study in mathematics teacher training
The aim of this study was to seek an understanding of good practice in the training of (primary and secondary) teachers of mathematics.
The aim of this research was to seek an understanding of good practice in the training of primary and secondary teachers of mathematics, based on evidence from a variety of mathematically high performing countries around the world. The countries that participated were: England, Finland (primary only), Hungary, Czech Republic, Ireland (primary only), Russia, China, Japan, Singapore (secondary only) and Ukraine. In each of the participating countries samples of between 100 and 200 trainee teachers in both the primary and secondary sectors completed an ‘audit’ of both their mathematical skills and knowledge (part A) and their understanding of mathematical concepts (part B).
