National Tutoring Programme
The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) supports schools by providing access to high-quality tutoring to help pupils whose education has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The NTP has been expanded for the third year of the programme, offering schools three routes to tutoring: Tuition Partners, Academic Mentors and School-Led Tutoring.
Education Development Trust is delivering the National Tutoring Programme Training Course, which is an evidence-based, self-directed and accessible online course focusing on best practice in tutoring. This training is being offered to all school staff who are nominated as School-Led Tutors by their school leaders, and to those who are recruited as Academic Mentors by Cognition.
School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors will receive recognition by the Chartered College of Teaching and gain access to further resources as they continue to navigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their pupils’ outcomes.
How it works
State-funded schools will receive National Tutoring Programme funding over the course of the 2022/23 academic year to deliver tuition to their pupils. This funding is paid in termly instalments via local authorities and academy trusts. It is intended to cover 60% of the unit cost of tuition, with schools targeting the tutoring offer towards their pupil premium (PP) cohort and making up the remainder of the cost using PP or other core school budgets.
The overall approach to the National Tutoring Programme in the 2022/23 academic year is to put schools in charge of designing and delivering a tutoring offer that suits the needs of their pupils. The Department for Education will support this by:

helping schools find high-quality tuition partners

providing training, via Education Development Trust, for School-Led Tutors

offering support to any school that requires it
There are a number of different training pathways to accommodate School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors’ differing experiences, phases and subject specialisms, which are outlined below. Please note that estimated completion times are dependent on the optional modules chosen by the participant, along with their existing knowledge and experience of tutoring or academic mentoring.

Teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) are encouraged to undertake an optional training course, which will help them plan for and deliver effective tutoring. The school is responsible for nominating the correct pathway for each School-Led Tutor.
All other staff who have been nominated to become School-Led Tutors – including teaching assistants and trainee teachers – will be required to access the mandatory training course for their subject and phase.
Participants will have four weeks in total to complete the virtual, self-directed training and assessment, regardless of which pathway they are enrolled on.
Programme content
The National Tutoring Programme Training Course is designed to help schools and tutors plan for and deliver effective small group and 1:1 tuition in the school setting. The training content brings together a vast array of research on small group tutoring and useful resources for various subjects and phases.
We have designed an evidence-based, virtual, flexible training programme with prospective School-Led Tutors, Academic Mentors and their pupils at its heart.
The curriculum will cover core topics including how children learn, how to plan tutoring sessions, how to work effectively with class teachers, child safeguarding and protection, adapting learning experiences for SEND pupils, providing support in alternative provision settings, speech and language therapy, behaviour, motivation, literacy, mastery learning and delivering tutoring online.
At the end of each of the pathways, there will be an online assessment.
Upon successful completion of the online course, tutors will receive certification as a School-Led Tutor or Academic Mentor, recognised by the Chartered College of Teaching, as well as partial credits towards Chartered Teacher Status
After completion of the National Tutoring Programme Training Course, Education Development Trust will be running a range of live ongoing webinars to support certified School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors. These webinars will include guidance on how to best deliver tutoring in schools, as well as a range of subject and phase specific content. School-Led Tutoring
Your school can nominate candidates for School-Led Tutoring once a school leader within your school has registered via the National Tutoring Progamme Training portal. If you would like to be nominated as a School-Led Tutor, we advise contacting your Line Manager who can begin the application process. Once they have nominated you, you will receive a link via email to our onboarding form where you can register your details.
