What is the National Tutoring Programme?

The Department for Education’s National Tutoring Programme (NTP) supports schools by providing funding to spend on academic support delivered by trained and experienced tutors and mentors.

What is the National Tutoring Programme Training Course?

The NTP Training Course brings together a vast array of research on 1:1 and small group tutoring, together with a range of resources. EDT provides comprehensive training which supports tutors throughout their career, as well as supporting school leaders to embed tutoring within their organisation. EDT's training provision includes:

Core training course for NTP School-Led Tutors. This is mandatory for School-Led Tutors without Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) if schools want to claim NTP funding from the DfE. Find out more here.
Online seminars. These 50-minute live interactive seminars are available for all School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors, providing training on a range of research-based topics.
Tutoring Spotlight On... These evening webinars take a deep-dive into high-leverage areas of tutoring practice through the eyes of an expert in that field. Participants are invited to pre-submit their questions prior to the event and hear them answered live.
Recorded content and resources on EDT's Tutor Development Portal include Snapshot Learning videos and subject-specific resources to support tutors' ongoing continued professional development.
The Award in Professional Knowledge for Tutoring. This is an optional accreditation provided by the Chartered College of Teaching (CCT) following successful completion of the NTP Training Course.
School Leader Portal. This is available for all school leaders who have nominated staff to participate in the NTP, helping them make informed decisions and implement the NTP effectively in their setting.

Training course pathways

Teachers with QTS are encouraged to undertake an optional training course, which will help them plan for and deliver effective tutoring. The participating school is responsible for nominating the correct pathway for each School-Led Tutor.

All other staff who have been nominated to become School-Led Tutors, including teaching assistants and trainee teachers, will be required to access the mandatory training course for their subject and phase.

Participants will have four weeks in total to complete the virtual, flexible training and assessment, regardless of which pathway they are enrolled on.

Your school can nominate candidates for School-Led Tutoring, once a school leader within your school has registered via the National Tutoring Programme Training portal. If you would like to be nominated as a School-Led Tutor, we advise contacting your Line Manager, who can begin the application process. Once they have nominated you, you will receive a link via email to our onboarding form to register your details.

Participate in research

We are conducting research, in partnership with ImpactEd, to assess the impact of the National Tutoring Programme on pupils and to identify ways to implement the programme most effectively. We are looking for schools to participate in a continuation of this evaluation, over the next two years. Taking part will give your school the opportunity to build your own institutional knowledge, for tutoring implementation as well as to support and contribute to research, which will benefit schools and pupils nationally.

Due to the need to capture baseline data, we particularly welcome participation from schools who are about to initiate the programme.  If you are interested in participating in this research project, please complete an Expression of Interest.
