Overview

The Future Teaching Scholars (FTS) programme was developed by the Department for Education to nurture a new generation of passionate and talented maths and physics teachers.

FTS aims to address the shortfall of teachers, where it is most acutely felt: in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

The six-year programme, which launched in 2016, provides scholars with a comprehensive package of support and training.

This programme represents the most innovative route into teaching, structured around bringing outstanding subject knowledge into the classrooms in a way no other programme does. These scholars already show evidence against the Teaching Standards which other trainees do not develop until later in their ITT years. 18-year-olds who are inspired to teach would go off to university and lose this commitment without the ongoing support and engagement of this programme.

Discover the Programme

FTS Scholars commit to a six-year programme, which is indicative of their commitment to, and passion for, the teaching profession.

They are educated in their subject to a high level and receive a grant of £15,000 to support their studies. Scholars continue to receive support from EDT and its Regional Training Centre partners through to the end of their Early Career Teacher (ECT) years.

Years 1 -3

Alongside a Scholar’s Undergraduate Degree, they:

Take part in school-based mentoring meetings and networking days
Receive regional training
Complete two three-day teaching experiences.

Year 4

A one year of Initial Teacher Training (ITT), followed up with one-to-one assistance to find their first teaching role.

Years 5-6

A further two years of support, coaching and mentoring as ECTs.

Our first cohort of Scholars graduated from the Future Teaching Scholars programme in 2022, as qualified and experienced teachers in maths and physics.

Employ a Scholar

Each year, we work closely with our Partner Schools to match our Scholars with vacancies in schools across England. Schools offer Scholars employment on the unqualified teacher salary scale, along with an appropriately reduced timetable that may scale up over the year.

We are currently looking for schools that have vacancies for Scholars to undertake their ITT year from September 2023.
