Girls' Education

Family and community engagement

Girls’ lives are complex and heavily influenced by their communities: we take a holistic approach to most effectively meet their needs.

Our innovations and partnerships in family and community engagement break down cultural and mindset barriers to girls’ learning and achieving in school. We engage with communities and professionals across sectors in innovative delivery models to support girls’ entry or re-entry into school, to create accountability structures and to challenge stereotypes that can limit girls’ learning.

We strategically partner with key community stakeholders to reach the most vulnerable girls and allow us to both overcome barriers to their accessing education and achieving in school – and to change the perceptions and aspirations held by girls themselves, as well as their parents and communities.

For example, in Kenya, we developed an innovative partnership with the health sector to ensure that schools remained in contact with the most vulnerable girls through a system of regular home visits conducted by community health volunteers.
