Global Dialogue

Bringing together leading international educationalists from around the world.

On 1 November at 9pm UK time, 5pm Canada time and on 2 November at 8am in Australia and 10am in New Zealand an invited audience of school leaders will again be connecting together across continents in our second live Global Dialogue event.

Global Dialogue brings together schools who are collaborating together to bring about truly school-led improvement programmes. In this event, the schools share what works for them in their local context with others from diverse communities across three continents. Their commentary will be facilitated by leading educationalists Michael Fullan, Tony McKay, John Hattie, Vivianne Robinson and our own CEO Steve Munby.

After the event, a recording will be available to view on this page.

This event will focus on some of the key themes that emerged from the last event, including:
  • Outcomes focused collaboration
  • Leadership capability for a network system
  • The power and potential of middle leaders

We are also privileged to hear from practitioners working in schools, in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand who will join the event and will reflect on these themes and their own experiences of working in collaboration and will respond to the dialogue as it unfolds.

The inaugural Global Dialogue event

The first Global Dialogue event was held on 11 February 2016 and brought together leading educators from four countries (the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia) to debate the challenges and opportunities presented by cluster-based school collaboration when used as a vehicle for school improvement. 

Steve Munby joined John Hattie, Viviane Robinson, Tony Mackay, Michael Fullan and hundreds of teachers, school leaders and other educationalists, from a variety of locations, ranging from isolated Australian communities right through to vibrant city locations in Canada, UK and New Zealand.

Tony Mackay - CEO of the Centre for Strategic Education

Anthony Mackay AM holds a number of important positions including Chair of the Australian Council for Educational Research, Chair of the International Advisory Board for the National Institute for School Leadership, Washington DC, and an expert consultant to OECD. He was Inaugural Chair of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership and the Inaugural Deputy Chair of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.

Michael Fullan - author, speaker, educational consultant

Michael Fullan, O.C., is a worldwide authority on educational reform with a mandate of helping to achieve the moral purpose of all children learning. A former Dean of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto, Michael advises policymakers and local leaders around the world to provide leadership in education. Michael received the Order of Canada in December 2012. He holds honorary doctorates from several universities in North America and abroad.

Steve Munby - Education Development Trust

Steve began his career as a secondary school teacher in Birmingham, later moving to the north east of England where he worked as a teacher and then as a lecturer. In the late 1980's and 1990's he worked in school improvement roles in local authorities in the north west of England and from 2000 to 2005 he was Director of Education in Knowsley, Merseyside. He was Chief Executive of the National College for School Leadership from March 2005 until November 2012.

John Hattie - University of Melbourne

John has been Professor of Education and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia, since March 2011. He was previously Professor of Education at the University of Auckland. His research interests include performance indicators, models of measurement and evaluation of teaching and learning. John Hattie became known to a wider public with his two books Visible Learning and Visible Learning for teachers.

Viviane Robinson - University of Auckland

Viviane is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Learning, Development and Professional Practice, at the University of Auckland and Academic Director of its Centre for Educational Leadership. She specialises in school improvement, leadership and the relationship between research and improved practice. She has authored five books, including ‘Student-Centred Leadership’ and has consulted on leadership development and research to agencies and organisations internationally.
