Global Learning Programme Wales

Education Development Trust has been working with more than half of Wales' 1,593 primary and secondary schools in Wales to deepen pupils' understanding of global issues through the Global Learning Programme.

Global citizenship on the curriculum

Being global citizens is a necessary reality for today’s school children and the Global Learning Programme Wales aims to embed global learning in the curriculum and the wider life of the school. Through the ambitious and visionary programme we are:

  • helping children and young people understand their role in a globally interdependent world and explore ways by which they can make it more just and sustainable
  • familiarising pupils with the concepts of interdependence, development and globalisation
  • stimulating critical thinking about global issues, both at a whole-school and pupil level
  • helping schools promote greater awareness of global poverty and how it can be reduced
  • enabling teachers to explore new and alternative ways of teaching about development and sustainability in the classroom.

Expert training and support

Using our expertise in embedding national policy initiatives, we have adopted a successful cluster model approach. We work alongside our lead schools offering 1:1 tailored mentoring with bilingual experts and highly targeted effective training. With sustainability at the heart of what we do, as well as working specifically with our lead schools, we have designed and delivered a universal training offer open to any teacher in Wales. Our training empowers teachers to address sensitive issues in their classrooms from Islamophobia to anti-immigration rhetoric.

Bilingual resource library

Effective supporting materials have been another critical factor in our success and we have produced an extensive resource library including case studies. These resources have been designed for the local context and they are all available in English and in Welsh.

It [the training] will help me to discuss sensitive issues effectively, discuss misconceptions and help with social and emotional needs of the pupils.
